When a felony crime has been charged and filed, a victim will get ain impact statement from our office to complete and return. There is a section asking for your name and address that is to be returned to Victim Assistance as well. This will allow our office to notify you of all court dates that you can attend. The impact statement allows the prosecutor, probation, and the judge to know what impact the crime has had on you and/or your family. It is important to keep Victim Assistance notified should you have a change of address. Many times, by the time a case comes to trial the victim has moved, and we are unable to locate them.
The Indiana Department of Corrections Victim/Witness Services Program notifies victims when their offender is scheduled to be released from a state prison, has parole hearings, has escaped, or is being transferred to a minimum-security facility. The notification allows victims to make any necessary arrangements for their safety. The Department of Corrections is in charge of all notifications. Call the 1-800-447-5604 for information. If the offender is being held in a local facility, call the Elkhart County jail at (574) 533-8644. They will be able to take contact information for victims of the offenders held in their facility.
