ORGANIZED CRIME AND DRUG ENFORCEMENT

Combating organized criminal activity and the proliferation of illegal drugs is a battle that Elkhart County law enforcement continues to wage. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney fully supports the Intelligence and Covert Enforcement (ICE) unit and local law enforcement on efforts to eliminate drug traffic in Elkhart County. The prosecuting attorney has taken a vigorous approach to prosecute those involved in organized crimes, such as drug trafficking organizations, and has established a seized asset forfeiture program to further weaken criminal rings. Since the inception of the asset forfeiture program, criminal organizations have been financially crippled while participants have been charged and prosecuted. Many of the assets seized from criminal organizations have been used in the continued effort to eliminate illegal drug use and sales in Elkhart County. Through the asset forfeiture program, criminal assets are seized by law enforcement, then ordered forfeited by the court. The proceeds are then distributed back to law enforcement for reinvestment in crime fighting. Since the inception of the asset forfeiture program, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has successfully seized over $1,500,000 in criminal assets.
