The Elkhart County Interdiction and Covert Enforcement Unit (ICE) is comprised of officers from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and the Goshen Police Department ÂUnder Indiana law, all persons arrested for a criminal offense are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law *** MEDIA ADVISORY *** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUSPECTED METHAMPHETAMINE LAB HIT BY ELKHART COUNTY I.C.E. UNIT MEDIA CONTACT: Bill Wargo, 296-1888 Officers assigned to the Elkhart County I.C.E. unit developed information alleging that a clandestine methamphetamine was operating at 26364 Lakeview Dr. Osolo Township, Elkhart County. Intelligence indicated and alleged that methamphetamine was not only being manufactured at this location but being sold as well.I.C.E. developed enough information to request a search warrant for the Lakeview Dr. location and on April 3rd the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department Emergency Services Unit (ESU) assisted I.C.E. in serving the ÂNo Knock search warrant. Prior to serving the search warrant I.C.E. had alerted the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Lab Team of the potential for an active methamphetamine lab.After the ESU made entry it was determined that there was an active methamphetamine lab operating. Due to the presence of numerous dangerous chemicals and the strong odor of chemicals an Osolo Twp EMS ambulance was called to attend to two small children that were found to be living at the residence. The children, ages 6 and 3 ½ were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment to exposure to the chemicals. Child Protective Services were called and took the children into protective custody.Arrested at their residence were two adults; 1. Christelle Nicole Chirwa, age 27 2. Michael Anthony Bowling, age 33Both were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine, a Class A Felony. A Class A Felony carries a sentence of up to 50 years. Ms. Chirwa was also charged with Neglect of a Dependent a Class C Felony which carries a sentence of up to 20 years. Ms. Chirwa was also arrested on several outstanding warrants for Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Paraphernalia. The Indiana State Police Lab Team located several grams of suspected methamphetamine as well as plastic bags containing ephedrine products, several bottles of Iodine, Coleman fuel, coffee filters, a grinder, and numerous match book covers with the strike plates removed, an indicator of a methamphetamine manufacturing method referred to as the Âred phosphorous method. The ISP Lab team found dangerous mixtures of chemicals Âin almost every room in the houseÂ. A Probable Cause Hearing was held on Saturday, April 5th and bond was set for each person arrested at $150,000.
