MAN WITH EXPLOSIVE DEVICE IN POLICE CUSTODY – NO FURTHER THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY IMMINENT

Media Contact: Curtis T. Hill, Jr. (574) 296-1888

Early this morning, a Goshen Police Department officer observed an individual near the area of the Elkhart County Courthouse in Goshen engaging in suspicious behavior. After observing the individual commit a traffic violation, the officer stopped him and found the individual to be one Sherman Fuller, 45, of Goshen. Mr. Fuller was wearing what appeared to be a homemade explosive device. Another officer arrived, at which time the two officers were able to convince Mr. Fuller to take off the apparent explosive device and submit to their authority without harm to anyone.

Although additional investigation is underway at this time, there is no reason to believe that Mr. Fuller specifically intended harm to other persons. The individual was taken into custody by the Goshen Police Department. As with all arrests by law enforcement officers, the facts and circumstances surrounding Mr. Fuller’s behavior will be presented to a magistrate to determine whether the arrest was supported by probable cause. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will determine what criminal charges are appropriate thereafter.

At this time, it is believed that Mr. Fuller engaged in this behavior independently. As he remains in custody at this time, no further threat to public safety appears imminent.

The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney appreciates the interest of the public and the media in this matter; however, as the case is actively pending, no further details will be provided at this time.
