*** MEDIA ADVISORY ***April 22, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMEDIA CONTACT: Curtis T. Hill, Jr., 296-1888 On the 5th day of February, 1991, the discarded and lifeless body of sixteen (16) year old Kari Nunemaker was found by a passer by near a wooded area in the Bonneville Mill Park in Bristol. Her mysterious disappearance on January 28, 1991 along with her tragic death have resulted in lingering questions that have cast a dark and gloomy cloud over this community for the past fourteen (14) years.I am joined here today by KariÂs parents, Donald and Shirley Nunemaker, Sheriff Mike Books, Indiana State Police Captain Bob Rich and Detective Tom Littlefield, along with others here at Bethany Christian School where Kari was a student at the time of her untimely death. This Memorial Friendship Garden was erected in her memory. We have chosen to gather here today because we have not forgotten Kari. Nor have we forgotten that the brutal murder of a sixteen (16) year old child requires that justice be done. Approximately one (1) year ago, Sheriff Books and I met to discuss the investigation into Kari NunemakerÂs murder. We concluded that the investigation needed to move in a new direction with a fresh perspective. Our goal was to solve this case, identify the murderer, and bring that person to justice. Sheriff Books and I requested the services of the Indiana State Police and their Cold Case Investigation Team. Detective Tom Littlefield, who leads up that unit in this area, has provided immeasurable assistance to my office and this community in a number of investigations and we are grateful to Captain Rich and Detective Littlefield for accepting the responsibility of rekindling this investigation.Over the past several months Detective Littlefield has worked nonstop on this investigation collaborating with representatives of the SheriffÂs Department and the Elkhart Police Department and conferring regularly with my office. These efforts have now paid off. This morning I filed an Information charging Fred S. Mott, age fifty-three (53), for the Murder of sixteen (16) year old Kari Nunemaker on or about the 28th day of January, 1991. Fred Mott disappeared from the Elkhart area on January 29, 1991 and is currently incarcerated at the Corcoran State Prison in California where he is serving a prison term of life without parole following a 1998 Rape conviction in Alameda County, California. We have requested a warrant for his arrest and arrangements will be made to return him to the State of Indiana to account for his crime. This case is solved. Any further communication or media contact on this case should be directed to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
